Beat the Texas Heat: Why Summer is the Most Brutal Season for Unprotected Wood


We all know how intense a North Texas summer can get. While we crank up the A/C and stay indoors, your backyard fence has to stand right out in the open, absorbing hours of intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation and triple-digit heat.

The Double-Whammy: UV Rays and Extreme Dryness


Unprotected wood reacts to the summer sun in two highly destructive ways:

  • Sun Bleaching (Graying):Intense UV rays break down the lignin—the natural glue that holds wood fibers together. As the lignin degrades, the gorgeous natural color of the wood bleaches out, turning a dull, weathered gray.
  • Rapid Moisture Loss (Splitting & Warping):Under 100°F+ heat, any remaining moisture inside the wood fibers evaporates too quickly. This causes the wood to shrink unevenly, resulting in severe warping, bowing, and deep cracks (checking) down the length of your pickets and rails.


How to Protect Your Investment


The only way to stop the sun from destroying your fence is by applying a premium, oil-based penetrating stain and sealer.



Unlike cheap water-based products or paints that simply sit on top of the wood and eventually peel off like a bad sunburn, a true penetrating oil sinks deep into the wood pores. It replaces natural oils, blocks harmful UV rays with specialized pigments, and locks out the intense heat.
