When you're replacing a fence, it's natural to compare prices. In fact, you should get multiple quotes.

But here's the mistake many homeowners make: they compare the bottom-line price without comparing what's actually included.

Two fence quotes can look similar on paper but be thousands of dollars apart because they're not building the same fence.

Ask These Questions Before Comparing Prices

Before choosing the lowest bid, make sure every contractor is quoting the same materials and installation methods.

Compare things like:

• What type of cedar is being used?
• Are the posts galvanized steel or wood?
• How thick are the steel posts?
• How deep are the post holes?
• How much concrete is being used?
• How many rails are included?
• Are kickboards included?
• What hardware is being installed on the gates?
• Is haul-off included?
• Is there a workmanship warranty?
• Are permits included if required?

If even one of these items is different, you're no longer comparing apples to apples.

If the Price Seems Too Good to Be True...

We've seen quotes where the total price was less than what quality materials alone would cost us to purchase.

At that point, you have to ask yourself:

• Are they using lower-grade materials?
• Are important items being left out of the quote?
• Will they come back asking for additional money later?
• Will corners be cut during installation?

A fence is an investment that's expected to last for years. Saving a little today can become very expensive if repairs or replacement are needed much sooner than expected.
