Why a Kickboard Adds Years to Your Fence

When investing in a new cedar fence, you want it to last as long as possible while maintaining its beauty and strength. One of the smartest upgrades you can make is adding a kickboard—a horizontal board installed at the bottom of your fence. Though it may seem like a small detail, a kickboard provides big benefits when it comes to protecting your investment.

1. Protects Cedar Pickets from Rot

Cedar is naturally durable, but even the best wood can break down faster when it comes in direct contact with soil. A kickboard acts as a barrier, keeping the bottom of your pickets lifted away from moisture, mud, and standing water that can lead to rot. This simple upgrade extends the life of your fence significantly.

2. Guards Against Lawn Equipment Damage

We’ve all seen fences with pickets splintered or chewed up at the bottom edge from weed eaters or lawnmowers. A kickboard is designed to take that impact instead of your cedar pickets. If it ever becomes worn, it’s much easier and cheaper to replace the kickboard than entire sections of fencing.

3. Reduces Soil Contact and Shifting

Over time, dirt and mulch can build up against a fence line. Without a kickboard, this soil presses directly against the cedar pickets, trapping moisture and creating weak spots. A kickboard not only absorbs that contact but also helps keep the fence line more stable and less prone to warping.

4. Adds Strength and Style

Beyond protection, a kickboard adds a clean, finished look to your fence. Paired with a top cap, it gives your fence an upgraded, custom appearance while also reinforcing the overall structure.

Bottom line: A kickboard is a small addition that pays off in years of extra life, reduced repairs, and a stronger, more attractive fence. If you’re building a new cedar fence or upgrading your current one, consider adding a kickboard—you’ll thank yourself later.
