Fence Replacement Series - Part 2: The Details Matter

In Part 1 of our Fence Replacement Series, we explained why it’s important to know what type of contractor you’re dealing with and how to compare apples to apples. Now, let’s dig into the next step: the details you provide when requesting a quote.

The truth is simple: the more information you share, the better your quote will be. Vague requests lead to vague estimates, which often turn into surprise costs later. A detailed request, on the other hand, helps contractors give you an accurate, fair, and complete price.

Do Your Homework First

Before you call a contractor, take time to decide what you really want. There are so many options when it comes to styles, designs, and materials that your choices will greatly affect your price.

Make sure you let each contractor know exactly what you’re looking for. The more details you provide, the better chance you’ll have of getting quotes that are the same — or at least close enough to compare.

Key Details That Make a Difference

Measurements & Layout

  • Know your property lines and the linear footage of fencing you’ll need.
  • Point out unique sections like gates, retaining walls, or tie-ins with neighbors.

Fence Height & Style

  • Decide if you want 6’, 7’, 8’, or custom.
  • Clarify if you want side-by-side or board-on-board, and upgrades like kickboards, top caps, or trim.

Materials

  • Western Red Cedar, Japanese Cedar, Douglas Fir, or Pine.
  • Steel vs. wood posts.
  • Pre-stained pickets vs. natural wood with stain after install.

Access & Site Conditions

  • Will the old fence need removal?
  • Any slopes, rock, or tricky areas to consider?

HOA Rules

  • Share HOA guidelines (height, style, stain color).

Why This Matters

By doing your homework first and giving every contractor the same information, you’ll make sure their quotes are truly apples-to-apples. That means fewer surprises and more confidence in choosing the right company.
